Start of the events summary

Join our Historic Kitchens Team in Henry VIII’s Kitchens throughout August at Hampton Court Palace, as they recreate a variety of fascinating recipes from the past.

Discover experimental history

Our team use historical recipe books and instruction manuals to explore the lives of the people who lived, worked and visited Hampton Court Palace throughout its history.

Watch as they undertake practical tests to investigate how food, cosmetics and household goods were made in days gone by.

Recreating historical dishes

The team will recreate dishes, scented objects and preservation techniques, uncovering how the world could have felt, smelled and tasted in the past.

You might be surprised at how familiar the recipes feel or discover some interesting details about historic cookery.

Independent research organisation

The work of the Historic Kitchens Team contributes to Historic Royal Palaces’ status as an Independent Research Organisation.

Authoritative research underpins and informs how we look after, interpret and engage audiences with the buildings, landscapes and collections in our care.

Important information

Our experimental historians follow original recipes, use original techniques and replicas of historic kitchen tools while attempting to show how our Historic Kitchens functioned in the past.

The fire in the kitchen is real and is hot and as with a modern kitchen, the tools being used may cause injury if misused or mishandled. Please remember that surfaces may not appear hot, and tools may not appear sharp. While we are keen for you to enjoy an authentic and hands on visit to the kitchens, please ask before touching items that the cooks are using and follow any safety instructions they, or our Palace Hosts may give.

Please ensure children are supervised at all times while visiting the kitchens.

Allergy information

Many historic recipes contain ingredients now known to be allergens. While every attempt is made to reduce their use, and while none are available for consumption, please note that these demonstrations may include the use and processing of almond (Nuts), flour (Wheat), Eggs, Mustard, Oats, Fish, Molluscs, and dried fruits (Sulphites).
