Discover how the Tower of London was built and the clever features that make it a good fortress. Be transported back to the Medieval era and see if you have what it takes to become a knight.
In this session, a costumed presenter will use stories and role play to explore the Tower’s role as a castle. Please note: This session takes place outdoors.
What to expect?
- This 45-minute session takes place mainly outdoors and pupils will be standing for the most part.
- Teachers will be asked at the start of the session about pupils' previous knowledge, learning needs and access requirements.
- Your group will be led to different locations around the site.
- The session will be led by a historical character in costume who will interact with pupils in a lively and responsive way.
- Your pupils will be encouraged to take an active part in the session through drama-based activities, questioning and debate.
- Teachers will be required to actively support the facilitator and engage with the session.
Learning objectives
Children will:
- Learn about the Tower’s use as a castle and identify the features of a fortress.
- Compare and contrast life today with life in the Medieval period.
- Take part in skills tests and train to become a knight.
