As one of the world’s most infamous prisons, the Tower of London has seen many people locked within the fortress walls. But who exactly was imprisoned here? And what conditions did they live in?

In this session, your pupils will help one of our prisoners to plot their escape. A costumed presenter will connect and contrast different stories from the Tower’s past, whilst exploring some of the historic spaces used to hold prisoners.

Learning objectives

Children will:

  • Increase their knowledge of the Tower of London as a prison.
  • Find contrasts and connections between prisoner's stories and learn how individual experiences can reflect wider social and political concerns.
  • Appreciate the reality of historical events studied in the classroom by placing them within the context of where the events took place.

National Curriculum links

This session supports:

  • An extended period study, e.g. Crime and Punishment.
  • Significant turning points in British history.
