The Blue Coat School

The Blue Coat School, Birmingham

The school’s technology, engineering and design (TED) students wanted their design to celebrate the diversity of the people that make up the UK. They included people of different age, gender, race and religion within the silhouette of King Charles. Purple and metallic gold backgrounds represent the royal colours and flags signify the four UK nations. To acknowledge King Charles’ advocacy for a greener future, the bench includes different ways we can help combat climate change. Trees, wildflower meadows and beehives join illustrations of green energy solutions such as electric cars, solar panels and wind turbines.

This bench was brought to life in collaboration with artist Donna Newman – an artist who seeks to inspire young people and transform learning environments

the winning design

We really loved the representation of all the people of Birmingham, cleverly designed inside the silhouette. The environmental messaging came across really well.
