Moorlands Primary School, Huddersfield
Year 5 students worked collaboratively to explore themes of community, the Commonwealth, the environment and the monarchy. A tree is used to represent new beginnings as the crown passes to King Charles III. Lilies symbolise Queen Elizabeth II and the flags of the Commonwealth nations shape the leaves. The four UK nations are illustrated by their national flowers: a rose; a thistle; a daffodil and a clover. The Monarch butterfly is used in the design to signify change, transformation and hope. Iconic London landmarks and the King’s cypher decorate the bench to represent the historic moment of the Coronation.
This bench was brought to life in collaboration with artist Kelly Ma – an artist whose work explores traditional and digital mediums.
the winning design
We liked that this design looked back to Queen Elizabeth II as well as forward to King Charles III’s reign, showing the end of one era and the beginning of the next. The inclusion of the Commonwealth flags in the tree was a great idea and beautifully designed.
