Milnthorpe Primary School

Milnthorpe Primary School, Cumbria

The Year 4 class at Milnthorpe wanted their design to celebrate the diversity of the world’s people and landscapes. Bright illustrations of people are depicted alongside scenes of cities, countryside and seaside. A tractor represents the important farming community which surrounds the school in Cumbria. The class sketched their favourite items from the Crown Jewels to be included in their bench design. Alongside King Charles’ cypher and animals from the royal coat of arms, these represent the coronation of a new British monarch. The bench also uses flowers and flags to represent the Commonwealth nations.

This bench was brought to life in collaboration with artist Amanda Quellin – a professional scenic artist who has worked in television, film, and theatre.

the winning design

We thought the students had worked together brilliantly to create the design. We really liked the mix of local and national symbols.
