Nestled in the landscaped grounds of Hillsborough Castle and Gardens, Lady Alice's Temple has provided a quiet space for contemplation for many residents of the castle. Secretary of State Mo Mowlam came here for peace and quiet, away from the pressures of politics, during her time at Hillsborough.

The small temple was originally given as a wedding gift to Lady Alice Hill by her brother the 5th Marquess of Downshire in 1867.

Today, it is open to the public and has been restored to its former glory. Framed by Yew Tree Walk, Lime Tree Walk and Moss Walk, it offers three very different views of the gardens.

Take a seat and pause for a moment, listening to the sounds of Lady Alice's pond just in front of you, before continuing your journey through our world-famous gardens.

“Lady Alice’s Temple is designed as a focal point. It is so important in garden design to lead the eye through the garden and along vistas. Even the smallest garden should have a focal point".

Claire Woods, Head Gardener

Yew Tree Walk

This picturesque path leads up to the castle from Lady Alice's Temple. It's the route of the original road to Moira which passed in front of the house and into The Square.

It was enclosed during the mid 1800s and is now named after the paired Irish Yew trees that line the path.

Moss Walk

Wander alongside the beautiful Moss Walk, framed under a canopy of lime trees, towards the Lake and Pinetum.

This stunning area of the gardens has recently had new paths incorporated to follow the original historic layout from the 1770s and is a beautiful photo spot throughout the seasons.

Who was Lady Alice?

Great-great-granddaughter of the renowned Wills Hill, Lady Alice Maria Hill was the much loved daughter of the 4th Marquess of Downshire.

The elegant Alice regularly featured in the society and fashion pages of the national press and a loyal tenant described her as a 'universal and deserved favourite'.

Her wedding to Lord Kenlis of Underley Hall was a very special occasion, with Hillsborough town bedecked with floral displays and bunting. The Castle gates and courthouse were illuminated and bonfires were lit across Hillsborough.
