Session: Marvellous Minibeasts [Gardens Session]

Join us on a minibeast hunt to find out all about the marvellous minibeasts that call Hillsborough Castle’s gardens home. Pupils will explore different habitats and learn about the lives of invertebrates in this hands-on session.
Learning objectives
Children will:
- Learn that a minibeast is an animal without a backbone i.e. an invertebrate.
- Be able to identify and name a few common minibeasts.
- Know that insects are invertebrates with 6 legs.
- Be able to suggest where we might find minibeasts (their habitat) and why.
- Learn that some minibeasts are camouflaged (and what this means) to help them stay safe in their habitat.
- Be able to use magnifying glasses to find and look closely at minibeasts.

This session supports:
- Pupils to understand how living things adapt to their environment, including camouflage.
- Pupils to learn how some living things (invertebrates) survive and move.
- Pupils to show curiosity about living things in their environment.
- Pupils to identify similarities and differences between living things in the environment.
- Pupils to treat living things with care and respect.
Please be aware that this session takes place entirely outside, whatever the weather. We ask that pupils’ dress appropriately for the day i.e. waterproof coats, shoes/boots or sun hat, sun cream etc.
