Conservation work and room closures
We are proud to care for some of the most important buildings in the world. It is essential that we carry out expert conservation at the Tower of London to maintain, protect and preserve the fortress for everyone to enjoy.
In 2025, St Peter ad Vincula, the Medieval Palace and the Middle Tower (the visitor entrance) will be undergoing significant work and will have reduced access or be closed. Before your visit, please check upcoming closures at the Tower.
Explore the spaces and learn more about their conservation below.
Chapel Royal of St Peter ad Vincula
The Chapel Royal's fascinating history spans over 500 years and many original features have survived from the Tudor period, including decorative arches and windows.
Conservation work will be carried out to maintain the historic Chapel, including examining the architectural remains of the medieval floor and excavating the burial ground.
Although St Peter ad Vincula is well-known as the burial place of famous Tower prisoners, previous excavations have uncovered that people who lived and worked at the Tower were also interred in the Chapel. We hope our conservation efforts might lead to more discoveries about the Chapel and life at the Tower.
Today, the Chapel is a parish church for the present-day Tower community.
Closures:
Until mid-June 2025
29 September-31 October 2025

Medieval Palace
The Medieval Palace will be closed for reinterpretation and conservation from 24 March 2025. Many original medieval features have remained, including an original 13th-century fireplace, a garderobe (lavatory) wall and a picturesque vaulted turret. Our team will repair the stonework, the floor and the wall surrounding the fireplace.
Once reopened, this historic route will provide a visually engaging space for all visitors to learn more about medieval life and society.
The Medieval Palace includes three towers: St Thomas's Tower, the Wakefield Tower and the Lanthorn Tower. These towers served as the main living quarters of medieval kings, with richly decorated and luxurious lodgings.
Closed until summer 2025

Middle Tower (visitor entrance)
The Middle Tower will be closed to maintain the building's structure. This conservation work will include repairing the windows, the roof and the moat causeway. The process will involve using as much original stone as possible and surveying the stonework to learn more about its origins.
The Middle Tower has been used as a visitor entrance since it opened to the public in the 20th century.
Closed from 17 June to 07 November (open during busy periods)
