As a fortress, palace and prison, the Tower of London was at the centre of many key moments in medieval history. Using the Tower’s buildings as a source of historical evidence, students will investigate some of the key individuals and events of the years 1154 to 1216 to explore how the Angevin kings of England used the Tower to assert and consolidate their power.
What to expect?
- Your session will begin in our lecture theatre, with a 20-minute introduction to set the Tower of London within the context of the period. The remainder of the time will be spent exploring different locations around the site
- Your students will be encouraged to take an active part in the session through questioning and debate
Exam board links
This session has been designed to complement the study of the Angevin period, and particularly the following exam boards:
- AQA Unit 2A: Royal Authority and the Angevin Kings, 1154-1216.
- Edexcel, Paper 2 Option 2A.2: England and the Angevin Empire in the reign of Henry II, 1154-89.
- OCR, Unit 1 Y103: England 1199–1272 (Enquiry topic: King John 1199-1216).
- OCR, Unit 3 Y303: English Government and the Church 1066-1216.
