Writing Queen Victoria's Childhood

About this session

Key stage 2 | Subject: English, History | Topic: Victorians | Session Type: Route-based

This is the story of a little girl who lives with her mum in London. Her dad died when she was just a baby, and she doesn’t really remember him. Her mother is always worrying about her; she worries so much that something terrible will happen to her daughter, that she never lets her out of her sight.

So begins Queen Victoria’s story.

This session provides a stimulus for writing, using Queen Victoria’s childhood at Kensington Palace as a focus.  Children are encouraged to imaginatively engage with Victoria’s story by interpreting paintings and objects, debating aspects of her life, and dramatising some of her childhood experiences.

What to expect?

  • In this hour-long session, your group will walk between several rooms inside the palace.
  • The session will be facilitated by a presenter in costume, playing a historical character, who will interact with children in a lively and responsive way.
  • Teachers and supporting adults will be required to actively support the facilitator and engage with the session.
