Lake and Pinetum

The lake and pinetum

Explore an expanse of picturesque waterways and magnificent giant sequoia trees in this secluded section of Hillsborough Castle and Gardens.

Look out for the flash of a blue kingfisher, goslings or even cygnets in this peaceful area.

Landscaped waterways

This large, beautiful lake is fed by the stream that meanders through the gardens from the south-east, before flowing off towards Culcavy to the north-west.

Leading from the Lake is a mill race that feeds the hydro-electric turbine, which serves the electricity for the estate when it is running.

Popular with the 18th-century landowner, the pathways and carriageways around the Lake were constructed to give the appearance of a much larger estate. These original features remain for you to enjoy.

The Pinetum

As you make your way around the Lake along the historic paths, look out for the Pinetum. This stand of majestic Sequoia and Sequoiadendron was planted in the 1870s.

Our team of expert gardeners continue to care for this area, adding new conifers and tending to the historic trees that have grown here for over 140 years.
