Whether you want to learn more about our unrivalled art collection, hear intimate stories of peace-building, or learn about surprising and world-shaping US relations to the Castle, we have a tour for you.

The Candlestick Maker and The Politician

In October 1771, Benjamin Franklin was warmly welcomed in from the cold by the Earl of Hillsborough, who placed his own great cloak about Franklin’s shoulders and begged him to stay as long as he could.

Join our expert guide to learn the intriguing story of a reluctant visit to Hillsborough Castle and the legacy it would have upon world history.

Led by an expert guide, you will get to explore changing attitudes to sexuality and gender identity using stories from the Castle's past and the rich collection of objects and paintings on display. 

From royal relationships and public scandals to political activism and evolving attitudes, Hillsborough Castle's connection to LGBTQ+ lives has existed for centuries.
