Guided Tours at Hillsborough Castle

Join a 45-minute guided tour to see the Castle’s interiors and its main highlights, starting in the 18th century State Entrance Hall. Get a glimpse of what you’ll experience on the tour below.

Once the tour begins and you’ve passed the State Entrance Hall, see the Ante Room, which features a large window overlooking the gardens, named for the 18th century architect James Wyatt, and see the fascinating miniature portraits.

The main room for political affairs in the Castle, the Red Room was originally the Drawing Room. Admire the 40 miniature portraits of English sovereigns, commissioned by Prince Albert, and discover the round table, central to previous political discussions.

The place for important state dinners, the State Dining Room hosts a spectacular view of the Granville Garden. Discover several treasures, including a beautiful replica tiara, to royal portraits and more.

Originally three separate rooms, it’s no surprise that the Throne Room is the Castle’s grandest room. Explore the ceremonial heart this residence and see the magnificent Chairs of State and Coat of Arms.

You’ll pass Stair Hall on the way to the Drawing Room.

The State Drawing Room dates to the 1800s and is designed in colours to suit the taste of Queen Elizabeth II’s mother, see the highlights including the Bust of Princess Elizabeth.

Central to the political aspect of the Castle is Lady Grey’s Study. Here, view the Good Friday Agreement and learn more about peace talks at the Castle.

A range of styles and types of work are included, but the works are all connected by the sitters who attended Peace Talks at Hillsborough Castle leading to the Good Friday Agreement.

If visiting in summer, see how many plant species you can spot, and explore the Jubilee Parterre, made in 2012 to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee. Or take a stroll around the Granville garden.

See the original 1940s Granville Garden – where only the planting has changed - signposted by the iconic gates. Next to the Granville, experience an idyllic view from the terrace to Lady Alice’s Temple while strolling down the Yew Tree Walk.

Younger visitors can experience the Imaginary Menagerie play trail, dedicated to celebrating the wildlife and animals that roam the gardens. Also, see how many exotic plants you can spot in the restored Lost Garden.

See more of the gardens

Have four or more hours? Explore more of the gardens.

Wander through the Walled Garden, which dates to the 18th century and formerly supplied the house with fruit and vegetables until the late 1900s. During the warmer months, see beautiful flowers, trees and seasonal produce grown in the vegetable beds and used in dishes served in the Castle café.

If you wish to explore the gardens from the gardens entrance, rather than from the Castle, the Garden Highlights Tour follows a trail recommended by our expert Gardener, Claire Woods. This can be followed at any time of year with the gardens being at their best during spring and summer seasons.
