SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) | Subject: History | Topic: Tudors | Session type: Classroom-based / Route-based - Henry VIII’s Kitchens 

Students will find out about the workings of Henry VIII's Tudor kitchens at Hampton Court Palace and discover how the great feasts were organised and prepared.

  • Singing a rhyme about exploring the palace.
  • Handling replica objects.
  • Trying on Tudor costume (with an opportunity to wear into the palace).
  • A sensory tour around the Tudor kitchens where students undertake a ‘find the same’ activity.
  • Herb crushing activity using wooden pestle and mortar in situ in the kitchens.

What to expect?

  • This session will take place indoors in both a wheelchair-accessible classroom and on the ground floor of the palace in the Tudor Kitchens.
  • The session will be led by a facilitator trained in working with SEND audiences.  
  • The facilitator will be in costume unless requested otherwise by the school.
  • The session is flexible according to the needs of your students but can involve: Singing a rhyme about exploring the palace handling replica objects; trying on Tudor costume (with an opportunity to wear into the palace); a sensory tour around the Tudor kitchens where students undertake a ‘find the same’ activity; herb crushing activity using wooden pestle and mortar in situ in the kitchens.  
  • A member of the Schools team will contact teachers in the weeks before your visit to check access and learning requirements.
  • Teachers will be required to actively support learners and engage with the session. 

Learning objectives

Students will:

  • Learn about Hampton Court’s stories and history.
  • Be empowered to use their senses to explore new historic environments.
  • Develop social and emotional skills.

This session is suitable for students with SLD and PMLD, who attend special schools or units.  

Please note that the presenter will be in costume throughout, unless otherwise requested. The session is suitable for students aged between 6 and 18 years.
