SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) | Subject: History | Topic: Tudors | Session type: Route-based and classroom

Students will find out about the workings of Henry VIII's Tudor kitchens at Hampton Court Palace and discover how the great feasts were organised and prepared.

The session is delivered by a presenter skilled in supporting students with special educational needs. It is based both in the classroom and on route, and includes the following:

  • Singing a rhyme about exploring the palace.
  • Handling replica objects.
  • Trying on Tudor costume (with an opportunity to wear into the palace).
  • A sensory tour around the Tudor kitchens where students undertake a ‘find the same’ activity.
  • Herb crushing activity using wooden pestle and mortar in situ in the kitchens.

Learning objectives

Students will:

  • Learn about Hampton Court’s stories and history.
  • Be empowered to use their senses to explore new historic environments.
  • Develop social and emotional skills.
  • Who is this session aimed at?  

This session is suitable for students with SLD and PMLD, who attend special schools or units.  

Please note that the presenter will be in costume throughout, unless otherwise requested. The session is suitable for students aged between 6 and 18 years.

Due to some essential conservation works taking place in the Tudor Kitchens, this session will not be available between January 2025 – November 2025

We aim to be as flexible as possible, and would be happy to discuss class size further with you at point of booking.

We also offer sessions developed for groups with a mix of moderate learning needs. At Hampton Court Palace these are Investigating King Henry (KS2) and Henry to Mary: A religious rollercoaster (KS3).
