What was the driving force of the English Reformation?

About this session

Key stage 5 | Subject: History | Topics: Tudors | Session type: Depth study

True believer or fickle opportunist? Can the buildings of Hampton Court Palace offer insight into the choices and influences of King Henry VIII?

In this session students will analyse Henry’s own personal faith, the rollercoaster of shifting dogma and the people who held different sway over the King's decisions.

Through a study of both the physical evidence of King Henry VIII's palace and contemporary documentary sources, students will evaluate the factors that would determine the course of England's faith for centuries to come.

What to expect?

  • This session begins in a classroom where the context and enquiry are set, before the group is led to different outdoor and indoor locations around the site.
  • Teachers will be asked at the start of the session about students' previous knowledge and access requirements.
  • Your students will be encouraged to take an active part in the session, through primary source-based activities, role-play and questioning.
  • Teachers will be required to actively support the facilitator and engage with the session.
