Mid-tudor crisis

About this session

Key stage 5 | Subject: History | Topics: Tudors, Elizabethans | Session type: Depth study Classroom-based / Route-based - Henry VIII’s Apartments

Does change always impede stability? Hampton Court Palace saw use by three mid-Tudor kings and queens over a decade, all with very different aims and agendas.

In this session students will evaluate the stability of the monarchy and the extent of the religious turbulence under King Edward VI, Queen Mary I and Queen Elizabeth I.

Exploring the palace buildings themselves, alongside contemporary sources, students will analyse elements of the Mid-Tudor Crisis through the uses of this key location during many significant challenges and victories for Tudor monarchs.

What to expect?

  • This session begins in a classroom where the context and enquiry are set, before the group is led to different outdoor and indoor locations around the site.

  • Your students will be encouraged to take an active part in the session, through primary source-based activities, role-play and questioning.
  • Teachers will be required to actively support the facilitator and engage with the session.
