Frequently asked questions about our Tower Home Educator Day

Use this link to book. Places must be pre-booked in advance.

Our registration desk at the Tower of London Schools Desk will be open to admit visitors from 10am.

We advise arriving before 2pm to ensure that you have time to explore the site and can join in planned activities. Last admission to the event is at 3pm, and the Tower closes at 4.30pm.

Please arrive at the Tower of London Schools Desk. From here, you will collect wristbands which will act as your tickets to enter the Tower, so please take care of them. From the Schools Desk will also be able to pick up printed maps and information to support your visit.

Please note that there is no access to the Tower Wharf from the Tower Bridge underpass.

Your ticket will give you access to the entire Tower of London site on Friday 31 January 2025. To enhance your visit, we have developed a range of activities specifically for home educated children and young people and their parents/carers.

You will have the chance to meet three fascinating characters related to the Tower of London’s history. These are; a Norman soldier; a Tudor Courtier; and an Edwardian Suffragette. Through Q&As you will discover what life was like for people in their position at that point in history. In addition, you will discover more about life at the Tower through object sessions and an art and craft activity.

You are also welcome to explore the rest of the Tower, including the White Tower and the Jewel House, in which the Crown Jewels are displayed.

Prior to your visit, you can explore our website to learn more about the history of the Tower of London. Search our learning resources for games, quizzes, timelines and videos on the Tower’s history.

The Tower of London welcomes all visitors, and we endeavour to ensure visitors with disabilities enjoy the full experience. Our accessibility guide provides more detailed information.

In addition, there are sights and sounds around the site that might trigger those in your group who have sensory issues. This includes:

  • Audio and film projections
  • Hard surfaces that can make some spaces echoey
  • Dramatic lighting changes
  • Light open spaces and darker, enclosed rooms
  • Guards and Yeoman Warders may shout in the course of their duties.

We will have a quiet space available for families throughout the day for a sensory break. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer a dedicated space for prayer. Please be aware that the quiet space is available to all our home educated visitors. The location of these spaces - and the locations of all activities - will be provided at registration.

Admission costs £6 per child. Adults are free on a 1 adult to 3 children ratio (under 5s are included in this ratio). Tickets for additional adults cost £32.10 each.

Buggies can be taken into the palace; however, storage facilities are limited so you may have to keep your buggy with you.

The Tower does not have any cloakroom or left luggage facilities.

You are welcome to feed anywhere on site. However, if you prefer a more secluded location you may want to use the quiet space.

There are toilets with disabled access and baby changing facilities:

  • on Water Lane, opposite the Lanthorn Tower
  • Next to Elizabeth’s Arch, in front of the Salt Tower
  • Between the Fusiliers Museum and the Waterloo Block

There is a changing places space in the New Armories Cafe. Please ask cafe staff for access.

There are baby changing facilities in the toilets at the Tower.

Our standard audio guides can be collected just off the main entrance. They are free to use and offer 8 different languages, including a BSL version. The guides have a neck strap making them easy to carry. Sound can be controlled, and they have an induction loop facility.

There is an indoor picnic area at the Tower. This will be indicated on the map you will receive on your arrival. Weather-permitting, you may like to picnic on the benches around the site or within the arches, opposite the raven cages. We have a range of options if you wish to buy lunch on site at our New Armouries Cafe.

The guided Yeoman Warder tours will be running and start near the main entrance of the Tower, they last for around 45 minutes. These tours can get very crowded at peak times. The content is aimed at adults and may not be suitable for younger visitors. The tour is accessible for most visitors. A route is detailed on pages 14/15 of the Tower access guide for those not able to use the steps. You will be able to re-join the Yeoman Warder tour before it enters the Chapel of St Peter. The Chapel has some steps to enter.

There will be a Home Educators afternoon at the up-and-coming Tudor Festival ‘Henry VIII on Tour’ at Hampton Court Palace in June 2025. Please visit Historic Royal Palaces webpages in the coming months for more information.
