Film and TV Locations Tour at Hampton Court Palace

Go behind the scenes of Bridgerton, The Favourite, and more!

Hampton Court Palace launches ‘Film and TV Locations’ audio tour to take visitors behind the scenes of Bridgerton and The Favourite

Hampton Court Palace – a place that is no stranger to drama of its own famous former residents – is giving visitors a sneak peek into the world of filmmaking with a brand-new audio and visual tour. From 18 August, visitors can learn about the magic that happens when Hollywood and history collide at Hampton Court Palace, the home to some of Britain’s most memorable monarchs.

Hampton Court Palace has played host to a century of iconic screen moments, from its first known appearance in 1926 for the silent movie that shared its name with the former royal residence, detailing the marriage of Catherine Howard to Henry VIII, through to more recent productions including Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean and award-winning blockbuster The Favourite, which tells the story of former Palace resident Queen Anne. In recent years, the Palace has featured prominently in Netflix’s pop culture phenomenon, Bridgerton, and spin-off series, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.

The new digital guide includes exclusive interviews with the director and executive producer on Bridgerton – alongside Historic Royal Palaces’ own film production team – to explain why the former residence of King Henry VIII, Queen Elizabeth I, and King George I was such an essential filming location for the hit series.

The new digital tour will take visitors through the very corridors, courtyards and grand rooms of Hampton Court Palace that have played host to royals and A-list stars alike, to learn about the behind-the-scenes work involved in bringing these productions to life. It will also detail the involvement of various staff at Historic Royal Palaces – the charity that cares for Hampton Court Palace – including the conservation and gardening teams, who all work to ensure the historic site remains protected during film shoots.

Other productions to have been filmed at Hampton Court Palace include Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! The Theory of Everything, A Little Chaos, and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.

Binita Dave, Filming Manager at Historic Royal Palaces, said: “We are delighted to have hosted some of the most prominent productions from film and TV at Hampton Court Palace over the years including Pirates of the Caribbean, Mamma Mia and Bridgerton. With the new Digital Visitor Guide, we hope to share the fascinating stories and behind-the-scenes moments that go into making films here at Hampton Court Palace.”

Emma Bell, Interpretation Manager at Historic Royal Palaces, said “It’s exciting to be able to invite our visitors to explore the world of filmmaking at Hampton Court Palace and see our wonderful building through a new lens. Filming at the Palace started nearly 100 years ago, and we hope that through this new tour, our visitors can discover why it is still as popular a location today as it was in 1926.”

The ‘Film and TV Locations Tour’ at Hampton Court Palace is available from Friday 18 August and is included in general Palace admission.
